FIFA Saved Balogun For USMNT World Cup Eyeballs

Don’t be fooled: FIFA’s “justice” for Balogun isn’t about fairness. It’s a cold, calculated move to boost World Cup viewership.

Let’s be brutally honest. FIFA, in its infinite, opaque wisdom, just rode in on a white horse, not to deliver justice, but to ensure the show goes on.

Folarin Balogun, the USMNT’s dynamic striker, had his controversial World Cup red card against Portugal overturned. He’s now cleared for the Semi-Final against Belgium. A triumph of fair play, they say? Don’t make me laugh. This isn’t about correcting a wrong. It’s about protecting an asset and maximizing eyeballs.

The incident itself was a mess. Balogun, in the heat of the USA’s dramatic 2-1 quarter-final win, went for a high boot challenge on Ruben Dias. Referee waved red, VAR confirmed.

Debate raged: accidental, reckless, or outright dangerous? US Soccer, predictably, lodged an appeal, citing “clear and obvious error.” Then, in a move that would make a seasoned cynical hack like myself raise an eyebrow, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee agreed. Reckless, yes, but not “serious foul play.” Bingo. Balogun plays.

The Smoke and Mirrors of “Justice”

For USMNT fans, it’s a cause for celebration. Their star boy, the one who carries their attacking hopes, is back. They’ll tell you it’s justice, that the initial call was a travesty.

And sure, maybe it was. But when does FIFA ever move with such swift, decisive “justice” for every contentious call in a World Cup? When was the last time a straight red in a knockout game, upheld by VAR, got reversed for a lesser-known player, for a less-hyped nation?

The silence on that front is deafening. This isn’t a systemic correction; it’s a surgical intervention. Balogun is a marketable player, a young striker with a high profile and significant market value.

The USMNT in a World Cup Semi-Final is gold for FIFA. It means prime-time television, major sponsorship dollars, and a narrative that keeps the casual viewer hooked. Losing a star player, especially from a nation FIFA is desperate to cultivate, is simply bad for business. Period.

“They talk about integrity, about the sanctity of the referee’s decision. Then they pull this stunt. It’s not about the laws of the game; it’s about the laws of the market.”

Undermining the Officials, Undermining the Game

The ripple effect of this decision is far more damaging than any single high boot. Think about the referees.

They’re out there under immense pressure, with VAR supposedly providing a safety net for “clear and obvious errors.” When FIFA, days later, steps in and says, “Actually, no, that clear and obvious error wasn’t clear or obvious enough, or maybe it was just a bit reckless,” what message does that send?

It tells officials their authority is provisional. It tells VAR operators that even their “final” word can be overruled from on high. This creates an environment where every contentious red card will be appealed, clogging the system.

The disciplinary process becomes a political football. Belgium and other nations are right to be furious. They’ve seen appeals denied for incidents arguably less severe, or equally ambiguous. The precedent is toxic: if you’re a big enough name or from a big enough market, you might just get a second bite at the apple.

The Red Marker Verdict: A Calculated Play, Not a Righteous One

Let’s strip away the pious pronouncements. This isn’t about the purity of the game. It’s about spectacle, maximizing the drama and financial returns of the World Cup.

FIFA has made a cold, calculated decision. Having a star USMNT striker in a World Cup Semi-Final against a top European side like Belgium is simply too good to pass up. Balogun’s market value, the US broadcast rights, the global buzz – these are the real considerations.

The integrity of the refereeing process? The consistency of disciplinary action? Those are secondary concerns, easily sacrificed on the altar of entertainment and profit.

So, yes, Balogun plays. The USMNT gets its man. But don’t mistake this for a victory of justice. It’s a victory for FIFA’s bottom line and the relentless march of commercial interests through the beautiful game. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either naive or complicit.
